Coal mining liberates methane gas trapped in coal seams. Waste Coal Mine Gas (WCMG) gas is a safety hazard and impediment in underground coal mines. It must be extracted by mine ventilation and coal seam drainage. This extracted methane can be used as a power generation fuel. WCMG has more than 20 times the global warming potential of CO2 in the atmosphere.
Energy Developments developed and owns one of the world's largest Waste Coal Mine Gas power generation projects at the Appin and Tower coal mines in New South Wales, Australia. This 97 MW project completed in 1996 established Energy Developments as the world leader in WCMG power generation.
The Company has two other WCMG power projects in operation, the 45 MW German Creek Power Project and the 45 MW Moranbah North Power Project in Central Queensland. These projects abate more than 2 million tonnes of CO2-e per annum.
